Which 6 Patient Types Present the Greatest Risk for Surgical Coagulopathy?

Although surgery places all patients at risk for coagulopathy, the following conditions may predispose some patients more than others to excessive bleeding:
  • Patient is older, with small body size
  • Patient has preoperative anemia
  • Patient has received antiplatelet/antithrombotic therapy preoperatively
  • Patient is undergoing protracted surgical procedure with sustained vascular injury
  • Patient is undergoing nonelective emergency surgery
  • Patient has comorbidities such as congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, or renal failure

Your ability to identify these patients, who may be at a greater level of risk, can guide the actions you take in the event of a surgical bleeding episode.
