Bovine Thrombin Exposure: How Real Is the Risk?

While bovine thrombin is an effective topical hemostatic agent, it can elicit a potent immune response in patients, which can lead to numerous adverse outcomes. Reported risks of bovine thrombin use include:

  • Antibody formation to bovine thrombin and/or factor V
  • Subsequent risk of cross-reactivity with human factor V
  • Hemorrhagic complications associated with factor V deficiencies
  • Antibody formation to other impurities that may be present in the formulation
Clinicians should consider known risks and benefits of available therapies when making treatment decisions for their patients to ensure optimal hemostatic outcomes.
