“If the patient’s at risk of bleeding to death, everybody has to be on the same page.” -Richard P. Dutton, MD, MBA

Trauma anesthesiologist Richard P. Dutton, pathologist/transfusion specialist Ira A. Shulman, and cardiothoracic surgeon Peter K. Smith represent different disciplines within the arena of operative hemostasis and transfusion medicine, but they have a common goal: optimal hemostatic outcomes for patients at risk for bleeding and clotting.

These experts have been brought together in the latest learning activity to be launched by the Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health (CMH) Foundation: “Achieving Operative Hemostasis: The Challenges of Acquired Coagulopathy.” Similar to other activities on the Blood CME Center Web site, this activity offers the most current information on strategies to achieve optimal outcomes in blood medicine. Its format, however, sets it apart. Known as PeerPaths™, this accredited program comprises 7 modules that are organized into 2 distinct paths, one geared toward anesthesiologists; the other geared toward surgeons. Once participants choose a path, they proceed on the educational journey at their own rate, selecting some or all of the modules and taking posttests along the way. Each path teaches the same central lessons, but from a unique perspective.

Module 1, presented by Ira A. Shulman, MD, is an introductory learning activity. Topics covered include the physiology of hemostasis, drawbacks of clinical laboratory testing for detecting hemostatic abnormalities, and hemostatic triggers that can place patients at risk for prohemorrhagic and prothrombotic abnormalities.

Module 2 provides in-depth case studies from the perspective of an anesthesiologist and a surgeon. Richard P. Dutton, MD, MBA, discusses the anesthesiologist’s clinical concept of “keeping up versus catching up” while explicating a surgical resection case. Peter K. Smith, MD, presents bleeding complications encountered in a CABG procedure and the use of directed and undirected therapy for managing surgically acquired coagulopathy.

Module 3 brings Drs. Dutton and Smith together as they each present on treatment strategies for achieving operative hemostasis.

Module 4 comprises a Q&A in which Drs. Dutton, Shulman, and Smith each address topics that include transfusion triggers, current resuscitation practices, and safety concerns regarding stored blood products.

In discussing ways to manage acquired coagulopathy and achieve operative hemostasis, these specialists combine their expertise to offer the latest clinical approaches based on their own unique perspectives. Click here to enter program
