How Do You Plan for Bleeding Episodes in Your Surgical Patients?

An important step in managing perioperative bleeding is not permitting it to occur in the first place. Stay ahead of bleeding events in the following ways:
  • Keep patients warm
  • Be attentive to what the surgeons are doing
  • Use good surgical technique
  • Be cognizant of blood loss in the surgical field
  • Try to keep up with the composition of your patient’s bloodstream so that he or she has what is needed to make clot
  • Have available transfusional and nontransfusional agents

Because predicting risk for perioperative bleeding is not foolproof, being prepared will go a long way toward managing bleeding events should they develop.
