Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical team members, perfusionists, hematologists, blood bankers, and other clinicians interested in managing surgical patients with anemia.
Statement of Need
Anemia is a neglected diagnosis, with multiple causes. Thought to be a condition that primarily affects underdeveloped populations, anemia is also prevalent in Western countries. Perioperative anemia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, and elderly patients are among those at greatest risk. This learning activity addresses strategies for managing perioperative anemia to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Describe the relationships among perioperative anemia, blood transfusions, and patient outcomes
- Discuss the importance of optimizing preoperative hemoglobin levels
- Compare the risks and benefits of pharmacologic options for management of perioperative anemia
- Describe strategies for effective management of preoperative anemia

A statement of credit will be issued upon receipt of a completed activity evaluation form and a completed posttest with a score of 70% or better.
