Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, trauma care specialists, registered nurses, and other healthcare practitioners who may treat or diagnose patients with traumatic injury and coagulopathy.



Statement of Need
Hemorrhage is a major contributor to the dilemma of traumatic injury and its subsequent care, and patients with massive traumatic hemorrhage inevitably develop coagulopathy. More than 80% of the trauma deaths that occur in the OR do so as a result of hemorrhage. The acquired coagulopathy of trauma is an important clinical issue that continues to be studied and debated. In this learning activity, an expert in trauma care discusses ways to manage coagulopathy, including the early coagulopathy of trauma.



Purpose/Goal Statement
The purpose of this activity is to provide updated information on how to manage trauma patients who develop coagulopathy.


Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

• Summarize the mechanisms and initiators of trauma coagulopathy
• Describe how resuscitation techniques for trauma patients with severe bleeding have evolved over the past 100 years
• Outline strategies for managing the coagulopathy of trauma
