Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of anesthesiologists, trauma and critical care specialists, surgical team members, hematologists, blood bankers, and other clinicians interested in surgical hemostasis.

Statement of Need
Bleeding can be a serious complication of surgery and achieving hemostatic balance is a perioperative challenge for the surgical team because of the potential for adverse clinical outcomes due to acquired coagulopathy. This case-based educational program comprises didactic and empirical learning and provides healthcare professionals with the opportunity to hear experts in surgical hemostasis discuss preoperative risk factors for hemostatic complications, common challenges to maintaining optimal surgical hemostasis, and how to evaluate current recommendations for utilizing topical hemostatic agents to control surgical bleeding.

Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
  • Review controversies surrounding the therapeutic options for controlling intraoperative bleeding
  • Differentiate topical hemostatic agents used in controlling surgical bleeding
  • Explain the benefits and risks of recombinant technology in managing surgical hemostasis
  • Explain how to implement current intraoperative protocols to achieve and maintain optimal surgical hemostasis
